Barzum and Baizli Soleil are a pair of young purple blooded trolls living on Alternia turning the time of Joey Claire's visit.

Barzum's bullet points were "They share a lusus", "Communicate with eachother telepathically…", and "Tragicomic". Baizli's bullet points were "They share everything", "...and through unbroken, deadeyed stares", and "Keeps hydrated". They were first revealed during the Hiveswap Troll Call on November 22nd, 2017, and were later featured alongside Lanque Bombyx in Hiveswap Friendship Simulator: Volume Eighteen.

Their bullet points were altered as from December 6, 2018 to "Finish eachother's sentences", "Two clowns, or two halves of one clown?" and "Communicate telepathically".

Despite consisting of two bodies, they appear to psychically form a single mind, but still possess two different signs; Barzum is a Capriun, sign of the Cartographer, which is bound to the Breath aspect, and Baizli is a Caprimini, sign of the Perilous, which is bound to the Doom aspect; both have a Derse sway.

Concept and creation[]

A leaked early version of the Troll Call referred to the twins as Barnum and Bailey; before the reveal of their official card, their silhouette depicted them standing in line with each other, deceptively appearing as one troll with two large horns.

Barzum and Baizli's dual-masked nature alludes to the masks of comedy and tragedy which have been associated with theatre and performance since ancient times. They also bear some limited resemblance to the Amazing Jeckel Brothers of Insane Clown Posse lore, a pair consisting of one good and one evil twin.

Etymology[]

Barzum and Baizli refer to the famous Barnum and Bailey Circus, while Soleil refers to the Cirque du Soleil, or "Circus of the Sun".

Barzum, in J. R. R. Tolkien's "Black Speech", also means "darkness".[citation needed]

Biography[]

Prior to Hiveswap[]

Barzum and Baizli may have hatched from a single egg, a singular zygote splitting apart in early development to form two individuals as in human identical twins

In Hiveswap[]

Joey and Xefros meet Barzum and Baizil in the purpleblood higblood car and they tease them while trying to figure out why they are in the car. During the third round of Marvus' game, when Joey must kill a purpleblood, Baizli attempts to attack Joey on the bridge between cars, claiming that Joey took too long getting Faygo. This leads to Xefros (who Marvus apparently released upon seeing what Baizli was doing) pushing him off the bridge, killing him. It is unclear why Baizli chose to attack Joey alone and if they both made the decision to attack Joey. This causes Barzum to have a breakdown and begin screaming and laughing hysterically, saying that she "can't feel him" and mentioning "his head my head our head" (since Baizli was decapitated). It is unclear what her status is now mentally, but it is doubtful that she'll ever recover.

Relationships[]

Barzum and Baizli had a close relationship with one another and like to do things together. It is unclear if they mutually chose to attack Joey or if it was just Baizli. After Baizli dies Barzum is extremely distressed and begins crying and laughing hysterically.

Other purple bloods[]

Barzum and Baizli seem to get along well with the other purplebloods but don't seem to mind them dying. The others seem to feel the same way because Chahut and Marvus are amused by Barzum's distress over Baizli's death.

Trivia[]

  • Their combined quirks are identical to Gamzee Makara's first quirk.
  • In the revised Troll Call of December 6, 2018, they were addressed with their last name first and their first names in the description next to it, in contrast to the format of the other revised cards, in which everyone is addressed with their first name first and their last name is given in the description next to the image.
