Batteries are used to power devices without their being plugged into a continuous power source. Naturally, characters in MS Paint Adventures and its associated adventure games would find the use of batteries something of a puzzle from time to time.
In Problem Sleuth[]
Problem Sleuth received a battery pack as a boon from the king of the weasels for writing up a treat between the four kingdoms. This battery pack was used to power his fenestrated wall without it needing to be plugged into a wall.
The Mobster Kingpin's portholes had internal, rechargeable batteries.
In Homestuck[]
Rose Lalonde's first laptop relied on battery power, which began to run low as the power in her home was interrupted by a rainstorm. Her connection as John Egbert's server player was lost when her battery ultimately ran out, but she was later able to recharge by connecting to one of the nuclear power hubs in the Skaianet Laboratory, and even later alchemically combined her computer with a hub, superseding the need for battery power totally.
Dave Strider took an external battery pack much like Problem Sleuth's from his brother. After the battery in fedorafreak's device died, he was never heard from again.
In Hiveswap[]
Several different sizes of battery can be picked up in Hiveswap: Act 1 and used to power various different devices.
The broken Says game in Joey Claire's closet runs on C-cell batteries, which can then be used to power the walkie-talkie found on her floor.
The radio in the kitchen is powered by D-cell batteries, which must be removed to power the flashlight.
The E-cell batteries, scavenged from the universal remote control in the living room, are an optional item, with no other object in Joey's Act 1 inventory to be combined with; however glitches have shown that they can be combined with the autotune microphone from Xefros Tritoh's hive (possibly hinted at by their coming from a universal remote). Several Steam achievements are associated with the E-cell batteries; attempting to place them back inside the remote awards the player with "NO. THEY'RE YOURS NOW", while finishing the first act with or without the batteries in your inventory awards "CELL YOU LATER" or "BATTER LUCK NEXT TIME", respectively.
Dammek's secret weapon runs on a kind of battery[1], and the glowing green cube which loses its glow after being used to unlock the door to his respiteblock, called "PowerCell" in the game's files, appears to be a sort of Alternian battery.
