Bonus updates are additional content usually produced for those who contribute financially to the creators. A series of Fan-Requested Game Commands were created for donators during the publication of Problem Sleuth; two were made during Homestuck's creation, before MS Paint Adventures began to grow in popularity and the feature was discontinued for the rest of the comic's duration.
Bonus updates were reintroduced with the launch of Homestuck^2: Beyond Canon and its associated Patreon page; exclusively available to the comic's patrons, these additional updates were canon, but "focus[ed] on characters or situations outside the big events of the main story" and were not "required reading for understanding the plot at large."[1] These additional updates were discontinued when Homestuck^2 was put on hiatus in 2021, and subsequently made available to all readers for free.
With the comic's relaunch as Homestuck: Beyond Canon in 2023, bonus updates continued, though with a change in format; these updates are "non-canonical one-shot comics" rather than canon ongoing stories, and are to become available to all readers after an exclusivity period of "a few months."[2]

For this content, we wanted to stick to some basic tenets: It should focus on characters or situations outside the big events of the main story, and none of it should be required reading for understanding the plot at large. However, it should still provide insight into the characters featured and the world they live in, much like the Paradox Space comics during Homestuck's original run." Homestuck^2: Beyond Canon, News. This was a sort of heavy decision that we understand may not sit well with some people so we want to be forward with you about it. We want to allow people the time to sort out whether they’d like to stay subscribed or not. Patreon exclusive content will be made public after a few months. This will consist of non-canonical one-shot comics, behind the scenes visual development, sketches, storyboards, writer/artist update commentary and a few other things that we will get into on the Patreon itself. I want this to be something you choose to do because you support what we’re doing, and never because you feel like parts of the comic are being withheld behind a paywall. The comic will still update on the main site as always." The Plan. October 18, 2023.
