In Andrew Hussie's early work[]
Human-horse hybrids feature heavily in Hussie's Humanimals, with an equine "humanimal" appearing in the first strip and many others in subsequent stories. Hussie is also said to have made a hobby of reviewing erotic artwork featuring horses and other animalistic forms in the past[citation needed].

In Homestuck[]
Horses are important symbols in almost every possible context in Homestuck. Maplehoof is the first equine to appear, gifted to Rose Lalonde by her mother, and becomes an important symbol to Dave Strider after following him as an infant to Earth. One of Spades Slick's primary weapons is a “CAST IRON HORSE HITCHER”
, and horse motifs are common among both sides on the Battlefield, owing to the DNA of giant chess knights used in the ectobiology facilities in the Veil.
Horses are a prominent cultural symbol on Alternia, where they are called hoofbeasts and can also be found in aquatic form. In reference to Hussie's earlier work, musclebeasts are animals that incorporate both humanoid and equine elements and are considered sacred by the planet's highbloods, and some animals in the butler genus also have equine characteristics. Equius Zahhak and his ancestor were particularly interested in the equine. The fiduspawn Horsaroni and Horsaponi strongly resemble horses.
Like Equius, Dirk Strider also has a strong appreciation for horses, and the combination of human and horse characteristics in particular, with various memorabilia reflecting this sitting around his room and on his computer. He is also in possession of his own miniaturized copy of Maplehoof.
It was frequently said that it would be ironic when Lord English's “very demise would be in the proximity of some horses.” The exact reason for this irony is never explicitly addressed; however plastic figures of horses were contained in some of the compartments of Caliborn's command station, and mysterious ghostly steeds roamed much of the dream bubbles. Homosuck included an invasion of stallions, and Caliborn's masterpiece depicts robot horses as part of Dirk's penultimate attack upon him.
