Matespritship is one of the four quadrants recognised in troll romance. It is a form of red romance, like moirallegience, and is a concupiscent quadrant like kismesissitude.
Matespritship is represented by the heart (♥ or <3) symbol and a flushed red color; as such it is known as the flushed quadrant.
Concept and creation[]
Etymology[]
Like the names of the other quadrants, matespritship plays on the term soulmate, with -sprit likely deriving from the French word esprit, meaning 'spirit' or 'soul'.
The suffix -ship denotes a special state or union between two people or entities (such as a relationship or friendship), from which derives the term shipping; interestingly however, on Alternia the concept of shipping involves not just matesprit ships but the other three quadrants as well.
Purpose and practice[]

As red romance, matespritship is “rooted in strongly positive emotions”. The specific emotions behind matespritship are sometimes called “MATING FONDESS” (sic), which may be most readily recognised by a human as feelings of 'love'; Karkat Vantas however more pessimistically considers it just one of many “NUANCES OF PITY”, which is in turn “JUST THE TONED DOWN VERSION OF [...] HATE”, the emotion central to black romance.
Also like human romance, flushed feelings are closely associated with sex and reproduction. As such, alongside material from a kismesissitude, genetic material from a matespritship must be supplied when the imperial drone arrives at a troll's home with his two filial pails, failure to comply resulting in swift execution.
