The Green Sucker and Red Sucker are the personal jujus of Calliope and Caliborn, respectively, taking the form of large lollipop-shaped candies. In actuality, they are the two halves of a combined Spiral Sucker.
Description[]
Though unsure of what power it holds, Caliborn supposes that whatever his juju can do on its own, Calliope's “PROBABLY DOES THE OPPOSITE THING”; though Calliope believes that hers is of “no valUe to [Jane] Unless i send my brother's jUjU as well.”
Regardless of whatever power they have individually, Caliborn is correct in stating that it “PALES IN COMPARISON TO WHAT THEY CAN DO TOGETHER.” When held in close proximity, the two Suckers are drawn together by a force akin to a very strong magnetic pull; if allowed to snap together, they combine to form the Spiral Sucker. The Spiral Sucker has its own form of attraction; “some powerful juju enchantment” that compels one to lick it. Giving into this compulsion engages Trickster Mode.
The dual nature of the jujus is alluded to in their captcha codes; “UrobUros” for Calliope's and “uROBuROS” for Caliborn's, referencing the classical symbol of the self-consuming ouroboros. Upon combining, the Suckers also briefly take the appearance of The Neverending Story's AURYN, a symbol resembling two interlocking ouroboroi - or two cherubs locked in their mating formation.
History[]
Like all jujus, Calliope and Caliborn's suckers had mysterious origins, “impossible to Understand or trace”; Calliope claimed, however, that they were heirlooms the pair had always had, “passed on from ancestors”, indicating that they were supplied by Gamzee Makara and implying they may even trace their ownership back to his ancestor.
Calliope kept her Sucker juju in a juju chest. After completing her "quest", she intended to give it to Jane Crocker as a gift. As the Skaia of her Incipisphere began to darken, however, and the chances of a successful game of Sburb for her became slimmer, she made the decision to relinquish the code early as a birthday present. Caliborn offered his half of the code to Jake English as part of his helpful duty as a “PATRON MANBRO”, and though Jake was unable to remember what it was or copy it down before closing the chat window, and Caliborn assumed the possibilities for the matching code were “PROBABLY INFINITE”, Jane quickly deduced that it was “obviously [...] the same as Calliope's, but written in the reverse case to match his quirk”, and was able to alchemize both, causing the originals in Calliope and Caliborn's room to “cease to exist.”
Upon licking “THE JUJU!!!!!!!!!!!”, Jane engaged Trickster Mode, and began to hunt down and transform her friends. During or shortly after the effects of Trickster Mode wore off, the Spiral Sucker “fell into the crypt” of Prospit's moon, possibly to again became one with the void to complete its circuitous timeline. However the Sucker makes one last return appearance in the Credits, wielded by Calliope and used to engage Trickster Mode at the wedding of Rose Lalonde and Kanaya Maryam. This may indicate that the Sucker was retrieved after its loss in the crypt, making the end of its timeline less clear, or that its origins lay earlier on in post-scratch Earth's timeline.
In The Homestuck Epilogues (Dubiously Canon)[]
The symbol for The Homestuck Epilogues' Volume: Candy appears to be the head of the joint Spiral Sucker juju.
Volume: Candy[]
The Spiral Sucker reappears in Volume: Candy under the name Trickster Lollipop, presumably following on from its Credits appearance in the timeline. After a drunken encounter, Jane Crocker and Jake English use the Lollipop to engage Trickster Mode during a night of lovemaking.
Trivia[]
- ANDing (&&) the captcha codes for the two individual Suckers would produce the new code "OHG1OHGK", while ORing (||) the codes would produce "?!wl?!w?".
